Happy October!
It's almost time for trick-or-treaters to fill their bags with sugar at YOUR doorstep and I wanted to talk about why it's important to choose fair trade candy this season.
The chocolate industry is has one of the highest rates for trafficking and child labor. Many companies do not have transparency in where they are getting everything in their supply chain, this is drastic. Not sharing or knowing where something is coming from and by which means is a huge hint that something should not be shared to the public for their reputation's sake. Honestly, there are so many articles out there about particular chocolate and candy companies and their damage on the environment and people- I won't list names but you can probably guess.
I often think "what's the point? So many people are going to buy mainstream candy anyways!" But then I remember that supporting the companies who choose people before profit are making a difference.
So... maybe kids won't get all the candy they want, but companies who deserve to be supported will be supported.
So... maybe it will be harder to find and for a higher cost, but knowing that the people behind the products are taken care of is worth it.
I support fair trade systems by buying fair trade. I choose to not support trafficking and child labor by buying fair trade. The makers lives are valuable to me. So...what are some fair trade candies?
